Thriving Green Spaces

Edinburgh's Thriving Green Spaces project is shaping an ambitious new vision for Edinburgh's natural environment. It aims to protect and enhance our green spaces so that they benefit people today and in the long term.

The City of Edinburgh Council is the lead partner of the Thriving Green Spaces project, which will develop a new 30-year strategy to protect and enhance parks and to make Edinburgh a ‘healthy city’, aligned with the 2050 City Vision.

About the project

Edinburgh’s parks, green spaces, rivers, lochs and shorelines have never been more important as we cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. They are vital for the wellbeing of their communities and city. This knowledge is at the heart of the Thriving Green Spaces project and together they will find better ways of connecting people with the natural habitats that make up the fabric of this inspiring city. Together they can grow, thrive, and adapt for the Edinburgh of the future.

The project aims to

  • Develop new funding methods to protect parks for future generations.

  • Ensure greenspaces are improved for people and for nature.

  • Explore new management approaches to help tackle environmental issues such as climate change, pollution and species loss.

  • Work with local communities to understand what people want so that we can make sure parks meet people’s needs now and in the future.

  • Keep Edinburgh green and thriving.

“Creating amazing spaces together.”
